3-Ingredient Slow Cooker Recipes: 200 Recipes for Memorable Meals Review

3-Ingredient Slow Cooker Recipes: 200 Recipes for Memorable Meals
Average Reviews:

I was pleasantly surprised by this cookbook. I was one of those people who thought slow cookers were just for pot roasts. Not so. In addition to main entrees, Bonet includes recipes for beverages, breakfasts, and desserts. I never would have thought to try some of the foods she suggests in my slow cooker. For example, I tried the Breakfast Casserole and it turned out great! Plus, I enjoyed not having to cook breakfast in the morning. It was nice to have it ready and waiting for me when I got up.
I've also tried the Peachy Chicken and it was good too. Next on my list are the recipes for Santa Fe Chicken and Acorn Squash. I'm glad I have this cookbook. I think I'm really going to save some time!

People love the convenience of their slow cookers. What could be better than walking in the door after a hard day's work to the smell of beef stew, ready and waiting? A beef stew that only requires three ingredients, that's what! The problem with most slow cooker recipes is that they require lots of ingredients and steps before you actually "fix it and forget it." Not this book-these are truly simple recipes, and best of all, they are memorable, not mushy! You'll find recipes like:*Rosemary Lamb Stew*Chicken Curry*Three-Alarm Chili*Spicy Pot Roast with Onions*Coq au Vin*Pork Roast with 40 Cloves of GarlicPlus, you'll find recipes for desserts like cheesecake and custard and appetizers like chicken wings and artichoke dip!

All-Clad 99009 Stainless-Steel 6-1/2-Quart Slow Cooker Review

All-Clad 99009 Stainless-Steel 6-1/2-Quart Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I work almost everyday (including Sundays) so this pot has been my life saver (or the dinner saver). My older one was 5qt. cool touch Rival. This All-Clad cooker cooks so much faster than my older one (the inside temperature of All-clad gets 230F in high setting). Ribs and 5 pound chicken done in 4 hours in high. If you want crispy chicken skin, let it cook for 6 hours. I highly recommend this product.
By the way I put small roasting rack when I roast chicken or ribs so that they don't stew in the dripping. Save the dripping broth. Put it in the fridge overnight, and get rid of the fat. And use it in your soup or stew, of course, this cooker can do that job just fine as well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updated Review: 4/17/2008
I've been using this slow cooker at least twice a week. Time to time I would hear "pop" sound either in the middle or toward the end of the cooking time. I couldn't figure out what was making this sound. One day my husband found cracks on the ceramic insert. They were fine cracks, but the cracks were in inside and outside. I contacted All-Clad. The service rep. told me to send a picture of the cracks. So I did. For several weeks I didn't hear anything from them. So I contacted them again. Apparently they didn't get my email with the pictures. So I sent them again. The next day I got a phone call from All-Clad that they would send me a new insert. It arrived a couple of days ago. I made a most wonderful chicken soup with leftover rottisserie chicken yesterday. I'm starting my love affair with this slow cooker again.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Review: 11/9/2009
I wish I could say that my slow cooker insert is still going strong. Unfortunately it isn't. I really tried to use them (I have gone through 3 inserts) as much as I could - until I could see the leak. I thought of getting a metal insert. However, it costs $200 NOT including shipping and handling. So I got the most modest Rival Slow Cooker: a 7-qt. with a turn dial. I've had it for 7 months. So far no cracks. It boils water quicker than All-Clad even in the low setting, but still no cracks. I had talked to an All-Clad rep about a possible defect in the ceramic insert, but she didn't seem to believe that theory. I wish I could change the rating to 2-star. It could have been 1-star, but I liked All-Clad's customer services.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Additional Comment: FYI the 2nd insert cracked within 2 hours in the high setting and the 3rd insert cracked in the low setting. After that I began to think maybe the inserts were defective. I did not abuse them. I only used as directed: high or low and went through the dishwasher. I'm using my humble and simple Rival cooker in the same way, and so far no cracks. I thought of getting the metal insert for the All-Clad Slow Cooker, but it was too expensive: $200 for the insert, over $50 for the metal lid (required for the metal insert) and $70 shipping and handling. Besides the reviews were not good for their non-stick metal insert. I'm very happy with my humble Rival 7 qt. Slow Cooker.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update: 6/10/2010
My humble 7-qt Rival slow cooker is still going strong. I've been using it every week, and still no cracks so far. I have made roasts, soups, stews, and casseroles. I haven't made dessert yet. I've seen Sandra Lee "baking" dessert in her white slow cooker. I can't remember if it was Rival or not. But I'll try someday.

Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens) Review

Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes and Gardens)
Average Reviews:

Of the 400+ pages only 190 of them are of any use to me. I use a crockpot because it is simple and tasty cooking. So, I was expecting alot of main dish recipies. And I was also expecting them all to be for the crockpot. There is over 60 pages of recipes that do not use the crockpot. There is over 125 pages dedicated to beverages, soups, breads, and desserts. I have never met anyone who has made hot chocolate or apple bread in a crockpot. Of the 190 pages of worth. only 25 pages were the type of recipies that I was looking for. ie. the chop-it up and throw it in the pot type. everything else involved browning or braising or some other type of stove technique. I guess I'm just the kind of cook who doesn't want to screw around with browning anything. I bought this specifically because of the reviews on amazon. Hopefully this review will speak to those of you like me that are not chefs and are just looking for something easy and tasty to cook.

No table of contents, just recipe after recipe in no logical order for a cookbook. No chapters or sections for different types of food. For example the first recipe is a soup, the second is a stew, the third is macaroni cheese and the fourth is a dessert!! Impossible to navigate through the recipes. 350 Big Taste Recipes for the 1.5 Quart Mini Slow Cooker: All American Favorites Adapted for the Mini Slow Cooker with an Emphasis on Healthy Eating Review

350 Big Taste Recipes for the 1.5 Quart Mini Slow Cooker: All American Favorites Adapted for the Mini Slow Cooker with an Emphasis on Healthy Eating
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nothing about the title is accurate. The recipes are far too large for a 1 1/2 quart slow cooker - one of them, the Brunswick Stew (which was dreadful, by the way just barely fit in my 3 quart slow cooker.
The recipes make no effort to reduce fat, calories, carbs, or sodium - especially sodium, since nearly all of them use canned food as the main ingredients, and are therefore loaded with sodium. A few of the dessert recipes do incorporate sugar substitutes - but a typical dessert recipe instructs you, basically, to use half a box of cake mix along with half the ingredients the mix calls for anyway. Ever tried to use half a box of cake mix? It's not easy.
In fact, most of the recipes are not cooked in the usual sense at all: they use already cooked ingredients and employ the crock pot to heat them slowly.
The one minor virtue of the book is that you can read the recipes and then draw some conclusions about how to adapt regular recipes for the crock pot - but that is true about any crock pot cookbook.
I am sorry I bought it and recommend against your buying it.

Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Slow Cooker Recipes Review

Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Slow Cooker Recipes
Average Reviews:

I will admit to avoiding these books like the plague for a long time. I wouldn't even flip through them to look at the pictures until my mom finally talked me into it. I love the photos. That right there will sell me on any cookbook, but I also like the lay out. I wish Rachael Ray would do the same thing. I think I'd like her books a lot more if they had photos like these do. Anyway, I ended up buying the slow cooker, the 20 minute meals and the grilling book. I took them home and spent a lot of time looking at the photos and reading each recipe and realized these are my new favorite cookbooks. I do cheat, I cut up my own onions, I make my own potatoes and sweet potatoes instead of using canned and pre-packaged ones, I grate my own cheese, and I try to use fresh ingredients over the pre-packaged, which I know defeats the purpose of the cookbook, but the recipes are right there with my own taste buds that its worth the extra time to make as many of the ingredients I can from scratch. I ended up buying all of the books and will continue collecting these as long as she prints them, and as long as they stay the same with the color photos and nice lay outs.
I love the sweet potato sheppards pie. That has to be my favorite so far, though I have enjoyed everything I have made.
I wish I hadn't been so stubborn for so long and found these books sooner. They are great, and remember, just because she says to buy pre-made mashed potatoes doesn't mean we can't make our own without all the added preservatives and junk, or that we can't cut op our own onions, etc. The options are there to help us save time, but if we have time, we can use fresh ingredients in place of pre-packaged.

This has a lot of recipes that are delicious, easy and good, as opposed to the recipes in some other books that seem to try to see how many weird, strange or clashing ingredients can be included in a recipe. This book also has a chapter of recipes from around the world, my husband & I love the Niku Jaga, Japanese beef stew. It's my favorite of the 12 slow cooker cookbooks I have.

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Two (NYM Series) Review

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Two (NYM Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this after reading a recipe in our local newspaper taken from the book. It has some wonderful, original recipes, with clear instructions, and, even better, guidance about how to buy a small slow cooker and what you can do with it once you have it.
Most of the recipes are too large for the really small 1 1/2 quart slow cooker, though a few fit that size. Fortunately, each recipe includes a recommended cooker size in the instructions.
My only disappointment was that some of the recipes call for ingredients I cannot possibly find in my rural area grocery stores. But if you live in a city or metropolitan area you can probably find all the ingredients.
Finally, do not buy the "350 recipes" cookbook Amazon tries to bundle with this one in the "buy both" listing near the top of the page. It's really awful - I've reviewed it separately.
If you have a 3 quart slow cooker, you'll enjoy this cookbook.

The Gourmet Slow Cooker: Simple and Sophisticated Meals from Around the World Review

The Gourmet Slow Cooker: Simple and Sophisticated Meals from Around the World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've tried three recipes so far from this collection, each one more complex than the last, as I gain my trust in this author. The Baked Eggplant was ridiculously easy (just cut the eggplants into cubes and cook on low for 4-6 hours, then add the seasonings after the cooking is done.) Next I tried the Tuscan White Bean Soup, which was excellent and not at all watery, like most crock-pot soups. Finally, I made a pot of Mexican Chicken in Peanut and Ancho Chili Sauce, and I can finally say that I've found a crock pot book that really does work.
The author encourages crock-pot users to lift the lid and stir while the food is cooking; I heartily agree, because the food ends up well cooked and NOT the watery, insipid mess I usually got. These are recipes that will not taste like a well-meaning, "good-for-you" home economics project. But this means you can't start your supper in the morning and have it done when you're back from work: the result may be watery. That's been my experience with other books, like Judith Finalyson's.
So if you're going to be home and willing to keep an eye on your slow cooker while it's doing its thing, you will be very satisfied with the recipes in this book.

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook (NYM Series) Review

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook (NYM Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love my crockpots (I have two oval ones in different sizes). I have several crockpot cookbooks in my bookshelf and have also read many others which I borrowed from the library. After reading these books, I came to a sad conconclustion that most people who use crockpot are not "real cooks" from many cookbook authors assumption; they write books for those who use a crockpot to make "canned soup+meat+frozen/canned veggie dishes."
I like quick and easy dishes and use canned soup occasionally but I don't want them to be the main item of my cooking.
With this thought, I was surfing the net a couple of days ago hoping to find a crockpot cookbook using fresh wholesome food and I came across this book.
The authors of this book created crockpot recipes for a cook like me (if you agree to my comment above, you will be happy to see this book!). After I read a couple of reviews by other Amazon users and bought this book (along with the Gourmet Slow Cooker Cookbook) from Amazon.
Yes, it requires more prep time and more ingredients but isn't it worth making that much efforts for healthier and tastier meals?! YES!!
Also, most ingredients appeared in this book are common items in my kitchen.
The only minus (4 stars istead of 5 stars) is the lack of photos of the recipes. I read cookbooks for plesure and those sumptuous looking photos are important to me. I know it makes the book more expensive if you have photos but it would be great if there are several pages of photos under each category to show how good these dishes look! I would definitely pay several more dollars for the photos for this book!

The Everyday Low-Carb Slow Cooker Cookbook: Over 120 Delicious Low-Carb Recipes That Cook Themselves Review

The Everyday Low-Carb Slow Cooker Cookbook: Over 120 Delicious Low-Carb Recipes That Cook Themselves
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So you're on a low carb diet, looking good and feeling great, but your family is definitely on a high carb diet and getting tired of the plain meat dishes you've been serving up lately. Or maybe you are the one who's tired of them. You would like to be able to expand your low carb recipe list, but you don't have a lot of time to spend on the fancy schmancy rigamarole that some low carb cookbooks require. If only you could have your fine palate and your waistline both satisfied...
Say no more my meat-eatin' bretheren! The Everyday Low Carb Slow Cooker Cookbook was literally the answer to my prayers some months ago. As a mom of two small boys and wife to a very picky man I was having a hard time keeping everybody happy at the dinner table while I watched my weight; the "two-entrée meal" was becoming the norm and it took way too much time. In my high carb days I had used my blessed time saver, the crock pot, regularly but recently it was gathering dust on the top shelf. Thank the Lord I can put it to work again and regain my time/sanity.
Now I have to try a minimum of six recipes before I feel that I can review a cookbook with fairness. The recipes that I have completed from TELCSCC are:
Seafood Crustless Quiche (I didn't miss the crust and neither did they - Fabulous!)
Orange Pork
Sausage and White Bean Soup (my dh literally told me it was the best soup ever, bar none)
Chicken with Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Artichokes (rich and hearty, a complete meal)
Chicken with 40 Cloves of Garlic (yes, really!)
Pesto Beef with Grape Tomatoes and Fresh Mozzarella
I think the genius of this cookbook is that the authors recognize that low carb dieters are not only just as busy as everybody else, but also come in a variety of skill levels in the kitchen. Accordingly, there is a special section at the beginning just for the quick'n'easy crowd that features fewer ingredients and timesavers like canned food and packaged mixes to add to your fresh meats and veggies. Believe it or not, the Pesto Beef recipe was one of these! Not that the more "complicated" recipes are that much longer or harder, believe me: the authors make it clear that since slow cookery is all about convenience, their mission is to keep it as simple as possible without sacrificing taste. It would appear that their mission was successful.
In many cases these recipes are so loaded with veggies and hearty broth that you won't need to make a salad or a side dish and nobody will even notice. There are so many more that I haven't gotten to yet, but I'm dying to try the desserts next; Peanut Butter Fudge Cake with Peanut Butter Fudge Drizzle, Coconut Custard, and Pumpkin Pudding, which is promised to be like the pie without the crust. Judging by my success with the quiche, the slow cooker is a natural with those eggy custards and puddings (averaging about 3-4 hours on low).
I would compare this cookbook to Mable Hoffman's Crockery Cookery (the high-carb "bible" for slow cookers) in terms of quality & variety of recipes and simplicity of use. My family has had no complaints since I've started using it, in fact they like TELCSCC dishes better than many of my higher carb dishes. I believe that this is truly the answer for the lifestyles and tastes of a modern health-conscious Americans.
-Andrea, aka Merribelle
